UTEP Scores Five Runs in Eighth, Beat Jackson State

The UTEP softball team ended a two-game skid when they downed Jackson State, 11-7, in extra innings on St. Patrick’s Day at the Jackson State University Softball Complex.

The Miners (9-14, 0-3 C-USA) entered the extra inning with the score tied 6-6 on the last day of the tournament.
Friday night hero, junior Alanna Leasau was placed on second base per international softball rules.

Senior Kayleigh Walts walked and eventually stole second, while Leasau advanced to third on the throw. Freshman Danielle Pearson walked to load the bases and then Kayla Black went up to bat. The junior started the scoring spree with a single that scored Leasau. Later in the inning, a pitch hit Charissa Ballesteros, with bases loaded that brought Pearson home.

Later in the inning, Black scored on a wild pitch and Senior Kayla Oranger solidified the win with a two-out, two-run single. Oranger added another multi-hit game to her career as she had two hits and added a steal to her stat line. Walts went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Pearson picked up her fourth win in the circle as she threw seven innings and struck out three batters. Along with her win, the Orlandonative had two hits and three RBI.

The Miners return to Conference USA action next weekend when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on Southern Miss. The Saturday doubleheader starts at 12 p.m. MT.
