El Paso, TX (KTSM?NBC VOD) — The UTEP men's golf team opened its 2013-14 season by securing a runner-up finish at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invite on Monday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
NMSU finished with a final round score of 6-over par, 294, finishing sixth overall with a three-round score of 6-over par, 870.
Sophomore Kenneth Fadke II led NM State with a final round score of 4-under par, 68. He finished tied for fourth overall at 5-under par, 211. In his final round, Fadke carded five birdies and one bogey. Junior Brett Walker was 2-over par, 218 for the tournament, placing 21st overall after a 1-over par, 73 in the final round. Walker fired four birdies on the day.
The Miners were consistently strong in the two-day event, firing rounds of 288, 287 and 286 for a total of 861. Host Air Force was champion of the tournament, shooting 849 (278-285-286).
Freshman Frederik Dreier had an impressive debut for the Miners, carding a seven-under-par 209 (72-69-68) and tying for second place. The native of Birkeroed, Denmark landed five strokes behind the champion, Air Force's Kyle Westmoreland (67-68-69-204).
UTEP also placed Jere Pelletier (ninth place, 73-69-72-214) and Martin Simonsen (tied for 25th place, 69-75-75-219) in the top-25 of the individual standings. Ian Patterson tied for 42nd place (77-74-71-222) and Jacob Loya finished 81st (74-76-84-234) to round out the Miners' scorers.
The Miners will next participate in the William H. Tucker Invitational Sept. 27-28 in Albuquerque, N.M.
