El Paso — UTEP Director of Athletics Bob Stull announced on Thursday that a national search will begin immediately to appoint a successor for Kathleen and James Rodriguez, who served as UTEP softball co-head coaches from 2004-13.
“We’d like to thank Kathleen and James for everything they have done at UTEP. They were our first softball coaches and have been exceptional ambassadors for the school and the program,” Stull said. “They have coached some tremendous student-athletes, including NCAA Woman of the Year finalist Stacie Townsend and national home run leader Camilla Carrera. They are outstanding people and role models. We appreciate everything they have done. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”
“We are grateful for the opportunity we had at UTEP. We met so many amazing people. It was a humbling experience coaching so many incredible young women,” Kathleen Rodriguez said. “We put UTEP in the record books with Camilla Carrera’s home run record and by defeating numerous top 25 teams, including the defending national champions twice. We look forward to starting a new chapter in our family’s life. We wish UTEP and the softball program nothing but greatness moving forward.”
Kathleen and James Rodriguez were at the helm of the softball program from its inception in 2004. The Miners defeated defending national champions Arizona and Arizona State in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Carrera clubbed 32 home runs to lead the nation during the 2012 season, and Townsend was an NCAA Woman of the Year finalist in 2010. The Miners also reached the title game of the 2009 Conference USA Championship. UTEP has not qualified for each of the last three C-USA tournaments.
