El Paso native Ross Rotwein shot a hole-in-one on hole #16, and the UTEP men’s golf team rallied to finish seventh at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Saturday in Albuquerque.
The Miners, who were in ninth place entering the final day of the event, put together their low round of 294 on Saturday to register a 54-hole tally of 891 (299-298-294). It marked the third time in 15 tournaments under second-year head coach Scott Lieberwirth that UTEP broke 300 in all three rounds.
Host New Mexico won the 14-team tourney (283-285-281).
Martin Simonsen carded a two-over-par 218 (75-74-69) to lead UTEP, landing in ninth place. The 2012 Conference USA Freshman of the Year shot under 70 for the third time in six rounds this season on Saturday.
Devin Miertschin tied for 22nd place (73-72-77-222), Roberto Ruiz tied for 38th place (75-77-74-226), Rotwein tied for 43rd place (76-75-76-227), Jere Pelletier tied for 53rd place (78-77-75-230) and Ian Patterson tied for 79th place (83-83-73-239).
The Miners’ top player during the 2010-11 season, Ruiz made his return to the lineup after redshirting a year ago.
UTEP will continue its fall season at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Oct. 22-23 in Las Cruces before playing host to the inaugural UTEP Miner Invitational Oct. 26-27 at Butterfield Trail Golf Club.
