Tyger Teras rolls home in $85,000 La Senora Stakes

Former $12,500 claimer Tyger Teras upset 6-5 favorite Back Seat Roll to gain a 1 and 1/4 length win in the $85,000 La Senora Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

On a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon, Tyger Teras produced a career best to defeat a 3-time stakes winner and a talented field in the New Mexico-bred stakes race for three-year-old New Mexico-bred fillies. Under a heady ride from Derek Bell, Tyger Teras swept by the front running K B’s Princess in upper stretch and held off a furious late rally from the favorite to take the third and most important win in her career. The grey roan filly by To Teras ran a bold race from off the pace and responded eagerly when challenged in deep stretch. The filly dug in bravely under Bell to take first prize monies of $51,000.

Let go at nearly 9-1 odds, Tyger Teras was coming off a resounding $12,500 claiming win at Sunland Park on Dec. 14 when she earned a 70 Beyer Speed figure. She confirmed that rating for an elated winning trainer Chris Hartman. The La Senora champion paid $19.60 to win. She is a 3-time winner from 7 starts.

Back Seat Roll came into the feature seeking her 5th consecutive win. The Roll Hennessy Roll filly broke alertly and was well within striking range early but found herself in tight quarters for much of the race. When jockey Enrique Portillo Gomez moved her to the outside, the filly responded with a gallant effort. She finished second over 2 lengths in front of the third place finisher Lakehouse Fun. Back Seat Roll won the $85,000 Enchantress Stakes at Sunland Park last month going one mile for trainer Henry Dominguez. She earned $17,425 for local owners Kirk and Judy Robison.

The Robisons also own Lakehouse Fun. K.B.’s Princess tired slightly down the lane after leading for three calls.

Live racing resumes on Sunday at 12:25 p.m.
