El Paso, TX — Juniors Richard Olsson and Janice Jackson made their second appearance on the Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic team that featured 11 women and 11 men.
All 22 honorees boast academic marks better than a 3.4 average and nine of the 12 women sport GPAs of 3.75 or better.
Olsson is one of the three honorees that sport a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Thephilosophy major was named to the 2011 and 2012 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was an Academic Medal recipient in 2011. After suffering an injury at the 2012 NCAA Preliminaries, Olsson opened the 2013 season stronger than ever with a personal best of 72.53m (237-11) in the javelin throw to rank 12th in thenation. The thrower went on to earn a silver medal in the javelin with a toss of 68.64m (225-02) registered on his first attempt at the C-USA Championships, where the Miners won their third outdoor team title and first since 2008.
Leading the women’s academic team is repeat selection Janice Jackson. The junior was the 2013 C-USA champion in the 100m hurdles. At the conference meet, she clocked in a personal-best of 13.11, which ranked her 14th nationally and also earned her the second-fastest time in program history. The hurdler proved to be victorious during the indoor season winning every 60m hurdles race in the regular season. Jackson shocked the competition at the C-USA Indoor Championships as she secured a spot in the national meet with a time of 8.17. She sports a 3.88 GPA in multidisciplinary studies and has twice been named to the C-USA All-Academic team.
Jackson will be representing the Miners at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. From June 5-8.
