
Detroit's Justin Verlander went 8 and 1/3 inning, giving up three hits, one run while striking out three, and he said afterward he didn't have his best stuff, but it didn't matter. Verlander's mediocre stuff was better than the Yankees Phil Hughes, who lasted only three innings, in the 2-1 Detroit victory.
Tigers now lead the series, 3-0, and are one win away from the World Series,
Phil Coke gave up consecutive hits in the ninth before striking out New York's Raul Ibanez to end the game.
Game 4 is Wednesday in Detroit.
