El Paso, TX — Kayla Thornton spent two weeks in the WNBA with the Washington Mystics during their preseason camp. The former Irvin High School and UTEP forward even hit two game winning free throws for the Mystics in a preseason game, but it was not good enough to earn her a roster spot. Kayla was cut by the Mystics on Thursday following the final game of the preseason. So she returned to her roots, El Paso, to train, finish her degree and hope for another WNBA shot, or even might try earning a spot on a team in the Czech Republic, which has shown interest.
"You know running and the speed of the game, that's never a problem, so I was able to adjust really fast to playing with those girls. Beau Bagley: Did you feel you did enough to earn a roster spot? Kayla Thornton: Um, I feel that I went down there and gave it more than 100%, but how it went, it's their decision, and what not, but I think I went out there and made myself proud and other people proud."
Kayla graduated UTEP with a degree in Criminal Justice, and is nearly compete with her Minor in Communication.
