Sunland Park Opens

They are racing at Sunland Park. The Upper Valley track began its seaon on Friday. This weekend’s racing menu at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is loaded with four big stakes races.

Saturday’s $85,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (5th race) and the $50,000 KLAQ Handicap (10th race) have terrific fields. Multiple stakes winners Miracle Snow, Fury of the Storm, First Blazin Love and Genuine American help make up an outstanding Jess Burner at 350 yards for New Mexico-breds.

Hot Springs Stakes winner City Sage, Zia Park sensation Safe Trip and defending champion Jam’n Jackson collide in a speed fueled KLAQ Handicap at five and one-half furlongs.

The impeccable stakes winner Rose’s Desert meets arch rival Iplaytricks in the $85,000 New Mexico St. Racing Commission Handicap (8th race) on Sunday going 6 furlongs. An extremely deep field converges in the $85,000 Johnie L. Jamison Stakes (10th race) at six and one half furlongs. Last season’s leading New Mexico-bred sprinter Our Choice is running along with multiple stakes winners Attitude E Racer, Smash Dancer and Desert Hennessy. Combined lifetime earnings of the field stands at over $3 million.

Mike Joiner’s Icu Deity ran a career best and set the top qualifying time for the $196,878 Sunland Park Winter Quarter Horse Futurity. The muscular son of Fdd Dynasty rolled through his 400 yard trial in a fast 18.94 seconds. Under jockey Salvador Martinez, the impressive freshman soundly defeated Ramblin Cartel by nearly 2 lengths.

The finale to the Sunland Winter Quarter Horse Futurity will be run on Friday, Dec. 28.
