Las Cruces, NM — Round one is in the books for the New Mexico State University women’s golf team at its home tournament, the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Intercollegiate, being played at the par 72, 6,258-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course. The Aggies finished day one in sixth place by shooting a 10-over-par 298 round on Monday.
NM State sophomore Kacey Dalpes mirrored her first-round score from a year ago, a 2-under-par 70, to once again find herself in prime position heading into round two of the Price’s. Last year Dalpes was only one shot behind the leader heading into Tuesday, this year she sits in a tie for third with three other golfers, two shots behind the leader.
Dalpes holed three birdies on the day, while only marking one bogey. Her 2-under is her best round of the young season and ties her career low for a round.
Freshman Valeria Macias also sank three birdies on Monday and almost cracked the top 10. She narrowly missed shooting par, finishing with a 1-over 73, her best round as an Aggie, and in a tie for 11th place.
Junior Laura Barron had two birdies during the first round and also finished with her best round of the season. Barron will start the second round in a tie for 34th with a 4-over 76 score.
Rounding out the NM State team is a couple of freshman. Kristen Cline, who played her first round as an Aggie, finished 7-over-par 79 and in a tie for 53rd place while Camille Orito finished in a tie for 69th with a round of 10-over 82.
Two of the better scores for the Aggies came from a couple of golfers who were playing as individuals. Sophomore Viviana Macias and junior Paige Darwin both finished with a 3-over 75 on Monday to place them in a tie for 24th place. Meanwhile, senior Amelie Buhl, who was also playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 53rd along with Orito, also marking a 7-over-par 79.
UC-Irvine leads the 14-team field with a round of 2-over-par 290, eight shots ahead of NM State. Portland State is one shot back at 3-over 291 while Nevada and CSU Fullerton are three back at 5-over 293.
Portland State’s A Ram Choi leads the field at 4-under-par 68. Tisha Alyn Abrea of CSU Fullerton sits one shot behind at 3-under 69 while the group that includes Dalpes is two shots behind.
NM State and the rest of the field continue the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” on Tuesday with round two. The 18-hole round is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. (MT) with a shotgun start.
