The New Mexico State men’s golf team concluded the first two rounds of play on Monday at the 2013 Herb Wimberly Invitational being played at the par-71, 7,074-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course.

The Aggies topped the leaderboard after each of the first two rounds and will carry a two-stroke lead over their I-10 rival UTEP heading into Tuesday’s final round. NM State finished with a total two-round score of 4-over-par 572 (283-289). UTEP finished at 6-over 574 while Colorado State will enter the final round in third at 7-over 575.

“Today the golf course played very difficult and we played solid all day long,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “We had a lot pars, a lot of balls in the fairways and a lot of balls on the greens. The kids handled the pace on the greens very well. I thought we did a good job of competing. Hopefully tomorrow we can handle the team and finish off strong.”

Three Aggies shot a round under par on Monday, sophomore Kenneth Fadke and junior Brett Walker shot a 1-under 70 during round one. Junior Pat Beyhan equaled their score during the second round. Combined with his even-par round in the morning, Beyhan is pacing NM State with a two-round total of 1-under 141. He will head into the final round in a tie for fifth place, only two strokes behind the leader.

Walker will enter Tuesday’s round with an even-par score 142 (70-72) and in a tie for eighth while Fadke will begin in a tie for 13th at 2-over 144 (70-74).
