The UTEP men’s golf team tied for eighth place at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday. The Miners shot 895 (296-302-297) in a 14-team field that featured six ranked teams.
Fourth-ranked California was the tournament champion (281-285-287-853), with Arizona second (290-291-286-867) and no. 19 New Mexico third (287-293-291-871).
“I’m really excited about the way we played this week in our first tournament of the spring,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “This is a good golf course but we made good decisions and good shots both days. If we continue this type of play all spring, good things will happen for this team.”
“We kicked a little rust off in this tournament,” UTEP coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “There were some bright spots and some good play. We definitely struggled with our bunker play and the short game got us a bit. But we finished the last nine holes pretty well. The guys were hanging in there, even thought we didn’t score as well as we’d like to. There’s still a lot of work to do.”
Junior Pat Beyhan led NM State by tying for fifth overall with a three-round score of 1-over par, 214 (68-74-72). He carded two birdies in the final round on his way to a 1-over par, 72. Sophomore Kevin Fadke II finished tied for 10th after a final round score of 3-over par, 74, including four birdies in the round. Fadke II finished the tournament at 4-over par, 217 (72-71-74).
Junior Brett Walker had the best round of the day for NM State with a 2-under par, 69. Walker almost cracked the top-20, placing 22nd overall with a three-round score of 7-over par, 220. He also recorded a team-high five birdies in the final round.
The Aggies will be back in action on Feb. 21-23 at the Bayou City Classic in Houston, Texas.
UTEP's Jere Pelletier tied for 12th place with a five-over-par 218 (69-76-73-218) to lead the Miners.
