Multiple athletes on both offense and defense recorded career games in the 41-7 loss to Utah State University on Saturday, Oct. 20.
There were four different NM State Aggies that had career games on both sides of the ball, including running back Germi Morrison, who had a career-performance against Utah State, putting up 96 rushing yards. Morrison's previous record was 76 rushing yards set against UTEP earlier in the season. Morrison also had 28 receiving yards off four catches, also a career-high.
Tight end Trevor Walls had also had a career game with both catches and receiving yards. Walls caught three passes for 37 total yards, a new career high. Walls' previous career-high receiving game came against Utah State in 2011.
Quarterback Travaughn Colwell entered the game late in the first quarter, taking various snaps in the wildcat formation throughout the game. Colwell finished with 12 passing yards and 31 rushing yards from five carries.
Defensive tackle Donte Savage had a productive day at the line by producing two sacks, bringing his career sack total to 14. Savage's last game with at least two sacks came against UNM in 2010.
NM State finished with 189 passing yards and 132 rushing yards for 321 total yards of offense.
Quarterback Andrew Manley finished the game going 19-37 for 177 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Austin Franklin caught eight catches for 84 yards and one touchdown, bringing his season total to 8 touchdowns. Franklin also ran the ball three times for 16 yards.
Safety Davis Cazares led the NM State Aggie defense with 12 total tackles, nine being unassisted tackles. NM State combined for three sacks on defense, two from defensive lineman Donte Savage and one from linebacker Trashaun Nixon.
Utah State scored early with a screen pass on their first offensive possession, resulting in a touchdown. NM State responded with a progressive first drive on offense, which included a couple shuffle passes and runs by Morrison. The drive stalled and resulted in a punt.
Morrison gained a total of 37 yards for NM State in the first quarter. Manley completed seven passes from 12 attempts for a total of 69 yards in the first quarter. Three different NM State defenders finished the first quarter with two tackles apiece.
NM State concluded the first half with 183 yards of total offense. NM State produced 97 passing yards and 86 passing yards. Morrison led NM State in rushing in the first half with 70 total yards off 12 carries. Morrison also caught three passes for 31 yards, bringing his all-purpose yard total for the first half to 101.
Two different Aggies accumulated at least 30 receiving yards for NM State in the first half. Morrison contributed with his 31 yards off three catches and Walls caught two passes for 30 yards. Wide receiver Kemote Bateman also contributed with three catches for 21 yards.
Cazares led the NM State defense with eight tackles, five of which were unassisted tackles.
The NM State offense finally put some points on the board midway through the third quarter when Manley completed a six yard pass to Franklin in the right corner of the end zone. After the successful extra point kick, NM State brought the score to 31-7.
Linebacker Trashaun Nixon recorded his second career sack in the fourth quarter when he sacked the Utah State quarterback for a loss of one yard.
