El Paso, TX — The El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association (EPBYAA) hosted Tommy John, a four-time Major League Baseball All-Star, as the keynote address at their fall fundraiser Saturday. “A Night with Tommy John” was held at The Base.
John, who holds the record as the 8th Overall Starting Pitcher in Major League Baseball history, is also the founder of the Let’s Do It Foundation which focuses on educating pitchers and coaches about pitching mechanics and proper arm care. John incurred a torn ligament in his pitching elbow that led to a revolutionary surgery that was named for him. The surgery saved his career and, since then, the careers of thousands of other baseball players.
About Tommy John
Tommy John (TJ) had a 26-year major league career (288 wins); he is best remembered for his seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1970s. He made appearances in the All-Star Game in 1968, 1978, 1979, and 1980. He played in all three Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series of his era (1977, 1978 and 1981).
On September 25th, 1974 TJ revolutionized the game along with Dr. Frank Jobe by having the "surgery", and although it seemed unlikely he would ever be able to pitch again, he spent the entire 1975 season in recovery. John would work with team mate and major league pitcher Mike Marshall who was said to know how to help pitchers recover from injuries. After a long and grueling rehabilitation, John returned to the mound with the Dodgers in 1976, completing 207 innings, recording 10 wins with a 3.09 ERA, and receiving both the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award and the Fred Hutchinson Award for Outstanding Character and Courage. His 10-10 record that year was considered "miraculous" but John went on to pitch until 1989, winning 164 games after his surgery.
The El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association (EPBYAA), a non-profit athletic organization founded in 2000 by Dr. Dwayne Aboud, is driven by its mission to identify, encourage and advance area youth baseball and softball talent to its greatest potential and create educational and career opportunities in our community.
