The UTEP softball team found itself down two runs heading into the top of the sixth inning. The Miners (7-8) piled on five hits and scored eight runs that topped Belmont, 11-5, at Rose Park on a cold Thursday afternoon.
Senior Ashley Collazo started the big inning when she singled up the middle with two outs that brought in two runs to tie the game. Senior Kayleigh Walts walked to fill the bases and the scoring onslaught continued. Sophomore Ariel Armendariz, who recently made the roster as a walk on, smacked a bases loaded double to left center that put the Orange and Blue up for good.
Miraya Montiel recorded her first two RBI of the season. The junior tripled to right field that scored freshman Danielle Pearson (reached on a walk) and sophomore Tahla Wade (pinch ran for Armendariz). Montiel would score on senior Kayla Oranger’s single to second base that put the Miners up 8-2.
Walts added her third long ball of the season, a two-run shot to left field in the top of the seventh inning. Wade doubled to left center and eventually scored her second run of the game when she stole home. Wade’s two stolen bases increased the Miners’ total to 13 in 2013 after stealing 16 in 53 games in 2012.
Pearson (3-3) picked up the win in the circle. The native of Orlando threw four innings and struck out five batters.
The Miners continue their Nashville trip when they play in the Purple and Gold Challenge. UTEP will play IPFW (1 p.m. MT) and the tournament host, Lipscomb (3:15 p.m. MT) on Friday afternoon.
