El Paso, TX — The UTEP track and field team is set to compete in the Don Kirby Tailwind Open on Friday as it looks to prepare for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
The Miners, winners of the C-USA Men’s Indoor Championships are primed for another title run and will try to gain some extra experience in their last meet of the regular season.
Leading the men will be All-American Mark Jackson. The NCAA Silver-Medalist is set to compete in the triple jump after placing sixth with a leap of 15.62m (51-03.00) at the 2014 edition of the Drake Relays. The senior currently ranks 21st nationally and second in Conference USA.
Jackson will also compete in the men’s 200m dash along side James Bias, Carlos Cavazos, Dallas Hart, Carnell Horn, and A-Shawni Mitchell at 4 p.m.
Competing for the distance squad is El Paso native Daniel Tarango will represent the Miners in the 800m run. The distance runner took gold in the event at the UTEP Invitational with a time of 1:54.74 ranking him 18th in Conference USA. Last weekend, the sophomore aided the Distance Medley Relay team to a first-place finish at the Drake Relays. Tarango will take to the track at 3: 20 p.m.
El Paso native Tommy McCoy and junior college transfer Roberto Camacho will represent the Orange and Blue in the 400m hurdles at 3:40 p.m. This past weekend Camacho recorded a time of 52.22 to place 12th out of 24 hurdlers at the Drake Relays.
Kicking off the field events for the women are Adebola Akomolafe, Fayon Gonzales, Taylor Gunn and Aisha Lee in the hammer throw at 12 p.m. (MT). Gunn currently ranks sixth in Conference USA with a personal-best toss of 52.44 (172-0.56) registered at the UTEP Invitational. Lee follows in at No. 19 with a throw of 46.02m (151-0) also recorded at UTEP’s last home meet.
Also representing the Miners on the field are All-American Nickevea Wilson and El Paso natives Monica Lopez and Jallycia Pearson in the long jump at 2:45 p.m. Lopez leads UTEP in the event as she ranks in the top 20 in C-USA with a personal-best leap of 5.67m (18-7.22).
The women’s 100m hurdles will feature four Miners.Leading the squad is All-American Janice Jackson, who opened the season clocking in a time of 13.05 (+ 2.1w) to finish fifth at the highly competitive Texas Relays. Most recently the C-USA Champion claimed silver at the 2014 Drake Relays with a time of 13.29.Greta Kerekes, Bria Love and Aeisha McDavid will join Jackson in the event set to start at 2:25 p.m.
Both squads will conclude the competition with the 4x400m relay projected to start at around 4:35 p.m.
