Houston, T.X. — The UTEP track and field team took three medals on the second day of action at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
Demetris Elia helped the Miners earn their first eightpoints of the meet with a silver medal finish in the hammer throw. The sophomore was consistent throughout the competition, but it was his third toss of 57.81m (189-08) that secured him the No. 2 spot overall.
The men’s 10,000m proved to be a highly competitive race which featured five student-athletes from Tulsa. UTEP’s Elphas Maiyo kept with the pack for most of the race. Until the last 800m when Tulsa’s Paulo Pinheiro and Maiyo began to pull away and sprinted for the finish line. The sophomore stayed on Pinheiro's toes and finished the race in second place. The distance runner earned his first conference medal with a time of 30:31.75.
On the women’s side, Risper Kimaiyo claimed her first gold medal in the 10,000m at the conference meet. The senior maintained the pacewith Rhiannon Johns’ from UAB, but in the final lap of the night belonged to Kimaiyo. The All-American clocked in a time of 34:47.64, disappointing the C-USA defending champion Rhiannon Johns.
El Paso native Jallycia Pearson finished fourth overall in the women’s heptathlon. The sophomore recorded the second-best score in program history with a total of 5,121 points.
The multievent student-athlete posted a six-place finish in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.16. Pearson set a leap of 5.39m (17-08.25) in the long jump and threw a mark of 34.07m (111-09) in the javelin to conclude the seven events.
The third day of the C-USA Championship will resume tomorrow at 4 p.m. (CT) with the women and men’s long jump.
