Miners Earn C-USA Athlete of the Week Recognition

Anthony Rotich and Risper Kimaiyo earn recognition from Conference USA as they were named Athletes of the Week for their performances at the 2012 NCAA Pre-National meet.

Rotich out ran 271 runners in the men’s 8K race in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday. The freshman crossed the finish line first posting a personal-best of 23:01.0 in the men’s red seeded race. Rotich defeated All-American Paul Chelimo, who was runner-up at the 2012 NCAA Track & Field Championship in the 5,000m. The Kenyan native led the UTEP men’s team to a 19th place finish out of 40 teams that competed. This is the All-American’s third Athlete of the Week honor this season.

Kimaiyo clocked in a career-best time of 19:46.0 at the 2012 NCAA Pre-National meet in the women’s 6K race. In what proved to be a close finish, the All-American finished second overall defeating 263 runners that participated in the women’s red seeded race. This is the senior’s fourth Athlete of the Week honor for the season and 15th of her stellar career.

Next up for the Miners’ is the 2012 C-USA Championships in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Oct. 29.
