Las Cruces, NM — New Mexico State men’s basketball head coach Marvin Menzies has added Aerick Sanders as an assistant coach and Eric Brand as the coordinator of player development to the Aggie staff.
“We are very excited to announce two new additions to the Aggie Family, Aerick Sanders and Eric Brand,” Menzies said. “Both guys bring a great deal of knowledge with them that will benefit our team tremendously. I’m looking forward to next season, and I know Aerick and Eric will be a great fit for us. Combined together both hires bring years of playing experience and an unrivaled passion for the game.”
Sanders arrived in Las Cruces after spending the 2012-13 season as an assistant coach at Montana State. He was a standout at San Diego State and played under Steve Fisher and Menzies, who was an assistant coach with the Aztecs from 1999-2003. Sanders was an All-Mountain West selection and team captain as a senior for the Aztecs. He averaged 16.1 points and 9.8 rebounds as a senior and then played professionally in France, Latvia, Israel, Spain and Turkey. Prior to coaching, Sanders owned and operated the Sanders Sports Academy that worked in skill development from 2010-12.
“I’m honored to work with coach Menzies and the rest of the staff here,” Sanders said. “I want to help the team reach their main goals of trying to get back to the NCAA Tournament and win some games in the tournament.”
Brand joins the Aggies after four years, 2009-13, as assistant coach at Texas State and one year, 2008-09, as an assistant coach at Tyler Junior College. He was a graduate assistant coach at Baylor from 2006-08. Brand played professional basketball abroad for five seasons in Austria and Australia. He ended his playing career in the U.S. and led the Elkhart (Ind.) Express of the IBL to a championship in 2007. During his collegiate career, Brand guided Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind., to three national titles in 1997, 1998 and 2000 and the championship game in 1999.
“After playing against them and seeing coach Menzies in the summer on the road, I feel very blessed to be a part of this group,” Brand said. “They have a winning tradition. I’m going to try and come in and help out wherever I can.”
