In the seventh overtime match of the season, the New Mexico State soccer team defeated CSU Bakersfield, 1-0, in a non-conference contest.
The Aggies (2-10-3) need less than two minutes in extra time to beat the Roadrunners (5-9-2). NM State scored when sophomore defender Alexys Brownell headed a ball into the net for her first career goal. The goal developed on a corner kick from senior midfielder Elise Nordin, which was her second assist of the season.
"We played great soccer," head coach Blair Quinn said. "We played better than we did on Friday, and we played better than the team we played today, and that's no disrespect to them, they are a good team. They have a couple dangerous players. We played good soccer and finally, just doing what we have been doing and preaching what we have been preaching, has paid off."
In the next to last home match, the Aggies played in front of a crowd of 458 fans, and Quinn said he has noticed the dedication from the community all season long.
"We appreciate the crowd, and we were happy to reward them today for keep coming back with a win," he said.
At halftime, the Aggies and Roadrunners were even at 0-0 with both team firing three shots on goal. Brownell led the Aggies with five shots in the game, and sophomore forward Layla Todd added three shots. Defensively, junior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter recorded the shutout, which was her first of the year and fourth of the season for the Aggies.
The Aggies return to WAC play at Texas State, Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in San Marcos, Texas, and then NM State hosts UTSA, Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. on senior day in Las Cruces.
