New Mexico State baseball was selected to finish third in the 2013 Western Athletic Conference regular season, in the coaches' preseason poll behind Dallas Baptist and Texas State, the WAC announced Tuesday.
The Aggies received 60 points in the voting that was done by the 10 WAC baseball coaches after a 35-24 season (11-7 WAC), which resulted in the 2012 WAC regular season co-champion title and an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Dallas Baptist, who joined the WAC this year, was picked to win the league with 80 points and eight first place votes after a 41-19 season. Surpassing the Aggies for the second spot is Texas State who received 65 points and one first place vote.
"Texas State must have a pretty good club returning, but so do we. I guess it's fair considering the number of key position players we lost from last year's team," head coach Rocky Ward said. "It's a good thing that we have Dallas Baptist, Texas State and Sacramento State at home this year and play them all in the first four weekends of conference play."
NM State finished the year with a 35-24 record but dropped two-straight games in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. NM State's RPI of 25 and their win-loss record helped propel the Aggies to the NCAA tournament.
The Aggies strength of schedule was great as they faced teams such as Baylor (No. 4 national seed), Arizona (NCAA Champions), Rice (Regional host), Sacred Heart (2012 NCAA Tournament participant), Kent State (2012 NCAA Tournament participant) and New Mexico (2012 NCAA Tournament participant).
The Aggies open the 2013 season with the Annual Alumni game on Saturday Feb. 9, at 2:00 p.m., with regular season play beginning Friday Feb. 15, at home versus UW-Milwaukee at Presley Askew Field.
