The New Mexico State baseball team fell 6-1 to Wake Forest in the series opener, Friday, March 1 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Aggies fall to 3-7 on the year after losing five straight on the road. The Demon Deacons are now 8-3 after today's win.
Freshman Derek Umphres accounted for NM State's only run as he hammered a solo-shot over the leftfield wall in the top of the sixth. Starting pitcher Christopher Bradley was credited with the loss on the afternoon and falls to 0-3 after working 4.2 innings, striking out three batters and giving up five runs.
Relief pitcher Evan Mott finished the fifth inning before Timothy Torsney entered the game to work three innings. He struck out five batters and allowed only one run on two hits.
After Wake Forest posted three runs in the top of the first, NM State held the Deacons scoreless in the second, third and fourth before taking a 5-0 lead with two runs scored in the bottom of the fifth. Five of the eight batters that got on base in the fifth reached on either a walk or by being hit-by-pitch.
"This hasn't been about our pitching," head coach Rocky Ward said. "It is about the fact that it has been a struggle to get a hit. We are having trouble to get the hits going."
The Aggies had a chance to squeeze the Wake Forest lead in the top of the fourth as there were two runners aboard with no outs, but the Deacon pitcher forced a pop-up to left that was followed by a double-play.
NM State finished with one run on five hits and no errors as the Demon Deacons tallied six runs on nine hits with no errors.
The Aggies take on Wake Forest in game two, Saturday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m. (MT). Fans can listen to the action live in Las Cruces on KSNM AM 570 with Jeff Matthews giving the play-by-play.
