Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State softball team ended the 2014 regular season with a 14-2 win over in-state rival New Mexico. The Aggies are now 29-21 on the season before heading to Seattle, Wash., next week for the 2014 WAC Softball Tournament.
Makalya McAdams took the win for NM State and improves to 11-5 on the season in her 17th start. She threw two and one-thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out one batter. Celisha Walker would pitch two and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and no runs, while striking out two batters. The Lobos’ pitching staff would issue 10 walks in the game to NM State.
Fiana Finau led NM State at the plate going 3-for-4 on the night with a three-run homerun and three RBI, while Emma Adams and Malena Padilla were both 2-for-3 in the game. Adams recorded three RBI, while Padilla collected two RBI. Kelsey Dodd also added a homerun in the game for the Aggies. Brennanlyn Nakamura added two doubles on the night, recording two RBI.
As a team, the Aggies out hit the Lobos, 13 to 8, while playing an error free game on the defensive side.
NM State took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Finau singled to right field to start things off and advance to second after Dodd was walked. Both runners advanced to third and second on a wild pitch by UNM, before Finau scored on a ground out by Padilla. Dodd would advance to third on the ground out as well. Two batters later Dodd scored on a wild pitch by the Lobos to give NM State a 2-0 advantage.
The Lobos cut the Aggie lead to 2-1 with a two-out homerun in the bottom of the second off of McAdams. Going into the third inning, NM State continued to lead, 2-1.
With one out in the top of the third, Rodriguez walked to put a runner on-base. Rodriguez then advanced to second on a pass ball, before Rother was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second with one out. Dohrwardt would pinch run for Rother. Finau then stepped to the plate and blasted a three-run homerun over the right field wall to give NM State a 5-1 lead. It was her 13th homer of the season. Dodd followed Finau with a homerun of her own to left field, the fifth of the season for her, pushing the Aggies’ lead to 6-1.
New Mexico then made a pitching change, just two and a half innings into the game. NM State continued to pound the Lobo pitching staff as Padilla singled up the middle. Ruiz then walked on four straight pitches, to put runners at first and second, still with one out in the top of the third. Covarrubia then reached on a fielder’s choice, as Padilla was tagged out by the Lobo shortstop. Ruiz would advance to second on the play. Brennanlyn Nakamura then doubled up the middle to score Ruiz from second and allowing Covarrubia to advance to third. Adams followed that with a single up the middle, scoring Covarrubia from third, making it 8-1. Rodriguez then grounded out to end the inning but not before the Aggies piled on six runs in the inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead over the Lobos.
New Mexico answered in the bottom half of the third with a homerun to make it 8-2 with one out. Walker would then replace McAdams on the mound for the Aggies. McAdams pitched two and one-thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out one batter. Walker quickly gave up two back-to-back singles before the Aggie defense forced the Lobos into a double play, ending the threat, as NM State held on to an 8-2 lead after three full innings.
In the top of the fourth, the Aggies put runners at first and second before Padilla hit a double to left, extending the Aggies’ lead to 9-2. Ruiz then doubled to center, scoring Dodd and Padilla to give NM State an 11-2 lead with just one out. The Lobos then made their second pitching change of the game.
Covarrubia then walked to put runners at first and second again with just one out. Brennanlyn Nakamura then hit her second double of the game. Adams stepped to the plate and doubled down the left field line, scoring Brennanlyn Nakamura and Covarrubia, making it 13-2 in favor of the Aggies. Rodriguez then walked and followed by Rother, who singled down the line to score Adams for third, as the Aggies ended the inning with six more runs on the board, leading 14-2.
NM State took down the Lobos in the bottom of the fourth, allowing just one hit before Walker shutdown the UNM batters as NM State continued to hold a 14-2 lead. The Aggies couldn’t push any runs across the plate in the top of the fifth but maintained a 14-2 advantage and were just three outs away from ending the game in just five innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Walker struck out the first two Lobo batters, before surrendering back-to-back-to-back singles, loading the bases with two outs. Walker then settled down and forced the next batter to fly out to center field, ending the game at 14-2.
The Aggies are the No. 1 seed in the 2014 WAC Tournament, May 8-10 and will face the winner of the No. 4/No.5 game between Bakersfield and Utah Valley on May 8th. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. (MT) in Seattle, Wash.
