Las Cruces, NM — Current New Mexico State linebacker Robert Wagner will be in New York City this weekend to cheer on his older brother, Bobby Wagner, a starting linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks.
NM State fans might remember watching Bobby on the field when he was a dominating linebacker for the Utah State Aggies from 2008-10.
“It’s kind of surreal to see Bobby in the Super Bowl,” Robert said. “I couldn’t have imagined that one day I would be watching him play in the biggest game in the world, the Super Bowl. I’m excited for him and I’m hoping for the best come Sunday.”
This season, Bobby led the Seahawks with 144 tackles, five sacks, one fumble recovery, and two interceptions. Wagner also recorded five games with double-digit tackles including a season-high 15 in the NFC championship victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
Bobby earned first-team all-WAC accolades for the third-straight season as a senior in 2011 as he led the WAC and ranked eighth in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in tackles with 11.3 per game, ranking tied for third in the FBS in total tackles with 147. He ended his career at Utah State with 446 tackles and tied the school record that was first set by Del Lyles (1988-91), and became only the fourth player in the history of the WAC to record more than 400 tackles, breaking the league all-time record of 443 tackles by Robert Rodriguez of Texas-El Paso (2001-04).
Robert, a native of Ontario, Calif., played in eight games for the Aggies in 2013, recording 10 tackles, including a season-high six against Rice. He was also a vital member of the Aggies’ kickoff and kick return teams.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. ET
