The UTEP softball team dropped the first two games of a three-game series to Tulsa on Saturday afternoon at the Helen of Troy Complex by scores of 2-0 and 9-0.
With the wins, the Golden Hurricane remained tied with Houston, who also won their two Saturday games against UCF, for first place in Conference USA standings. The Miners fell to 16-35-1 for the season and 1-20-1 while Tulsa improved to 39-12 and 17-5 in league games.
The Golden Hurricane were quick to strike in the top of the first. With two outs on the board and two runners on base second baseman Skylar Swanson hit a deep single to right field to light up the scoreboard 1-0.
Senior pitcher Courtney Auger and the Miner defense kept the Golden Hurricane from home through five innings before Tulsa added an assurance run in the top of the seventh.
Auger went the distance in the loss giving up the two runs on 10 hits scattered throughout seven innings.
Aimee Creger picked up the win moving to 21-2 on the season holding the Miners to just two hits in her complete-game effort. Samantha Alvillar and Kayleigh Walts were the two Miners registering hits against Creger.
The Golden Hurricane unleashed on the Miners in the second game of the twin bill showing why they are the current leaders atop the C-USA standings picking up their 40th win of the season with the 9-0 win.
Alvillar, Walts and Courtney Ware were the only Miners that managed hits off of Jordan Kinard.
The Miners will close out the 2011 campaign tomorrow at noon at the Helen of Troy Complex celebrating senior day for a special group of ladies, Kia Moore, Becky Smith and Courtney Auger.
