The men’s 4x400-meter relay highlighted a less than fortunate day for the UTEP track and field team at the 102nd Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday.
Suji Adeniyan, Anderson Mutegi, Leon Dillihunt and Curtis Kock combined for a 3:09.73 at the finish line to advance to tomorrow’s final. The foursome will take the track with Baylor, Georgia, Ohio State, Mississippi, Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois at 4:42 p.m. (MT).
The day, however, did not start well for the Miners as the men’s 4x100-meter relay was the first team out of the finals recording a time of 40.73 in the third of as many heats.
All-American Endurance Abinuwa did not fare any better in the women’s 100-meter dash where she had a false start. Abinuwa went into the event ranked 18th in the nation with a time of 11.29.
Things were no different on the field events for the UTEP athletes. Freshman Richard Olsson finished 17th in the men’s javelin with a mark of 59.70m (179-10). In the women’s event, Laura Macauley was 11th posting her day’s best on her first attempt, 42.02m (137-10). The string of bad luck continued as sophomore Tako Niare was unable to clear a height in the women’s high jump competition.
The women’s 4x800-meter squad made up of Kitria Stewart, Jackline Ekai, Rebecca Crain and Gladys Chumba closed out the day with a 14th-place finish clocking in a time of 9:17.74.
UTEP will have athletes in four events in the closing day of America’s Athletic Classic beginning with Terran Alexander in the women’s hammer throw at 8 a.m. (CT). All-American Dimitrios Fylladitakis will compete in the men’s version of the event at 11:30 a.m. (MT).
On the track it will be UTEP’s sprinters back on for the men’s sprint medley relay at 9:35 a.m.
