El Paso (KDBC) — Back to school shopping means spending some big bucks, but those in New Mexico have the chance to save some money this weekend.
New Mexico's 10th annual tax free weekend runs from Friday to Sunday.
"It saves some little money..here and there. We hunt for specials and stuff and its nice to save some money," said Jose De Luna, a Las Cruces resident.
Tax exemptions include computers and tablets up to $1,000, computer hardware up to $500, clothing and shoes up to $100, and school supplies under $30.
"We get them what they need right now but and then little by little buy it because sometimes its just hard to do it all at once," said Victoria Gonzales, a Las Cruces resident.
Tax free weekends are usually held the first couple of weeks of August in states across the country, as a way to promote back to school shopping.
Retailers don't have to pay gross receipt taxes on certain items they sell during the weekend, which is why shoppers get to skip on paying taxes on those items.
Texas' tax free weekend starts on August 8.
