Sierra Blanca, TX (KDBC) — Three Detention Officers from the West Texas Detention Facility were killed early Thursday morning when the 2005 Chevy Suburban they were riding in lost control, ejecting the three. Two others were also injured in the crash.
Texas Department of Safety spokesperson Elizabeth Barney confirmed the deaths of Alan Pena, 20, of El Paso, Rudy Arana, 25, of El Paso and Taylor McKenzie of Cibolo, TX. All three were Detention Officers.
The crash happened at approximately 6:40 a.m. Thursday morning when George Gomez-Olague, 20, was driving westbound on I-10 near mile marker 104 when he attempted to make an unsafe lane change and lost control of the Suburban, causing it to roll. Gomez-Olague was taken to Del Sol Medical Center with neck and shoulder injuries and was last listed in critical but stable condition.
A fifth passenger, 25-year-old Christopher Sierra, of Horizon, also received serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Del Sol Medical Center. He was also last listed in critical but stable condition.
The three men who were ejected from the Suburban were not wearing their seatbelts.
I-10 westbound was reopened to traffic before 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
