El Paso, TX — UTEP softball head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk announced the addition of Kaitlin Ryder for the 2015 season on Thursday.
Ryder is currently completing her fourth season playing catcher on the varsity squad at Chatsworth Charter High School (12-5, 2-0 West Valley League) in Chatsworth, Calif.
“She’s a great presence on the field and has command over everything that happens,” Echo-Hawk said. “She’s going to be a great addition offensively; she hits the ball really well. We’re looking forward to having her compete for that position behind the plate next year.”
Offensively, Ryder has made a presence on the field. The four-year varsity letter winner has played in 92 games for the Chancellors. The right-handed hitter has belted 23-career home runs, with 104 RBI, while recording a .503 (146-for-290) batting average. Defensively, she has not committed an error in two seasons and has a .989-career fielding percentage.
After earning multiple accolades after the 2013 season, Ryder has followed up with a strong 2014. The 5-foot-1 slugger is hitting .519 (28-for-54) with three long balls, 20 RBI, seven doubles, four triples, and has scored 17 runs. Ryder has produced a trio of three-RBI games, while recording at least one hit in the first 17 games of the new campaign.
Last season, Ryder was named All-City first team, WestValley first team, MVP, Offensive player of the Year, while being recognized by the Los Angeles Daily News: 2014 All-Area preseason selection. Ryder hit 10home runs, tallied 44 RBI with a .505 (53-for-128) batting average in 2013.
Ryder’s best game came during a 21-2 win over Heritage Christian (April 19, 2013). She tallied a career-best six RBI on a 4-for-4 (four doubles) performance.
Ryder, Echo-Hawk’s sixth signee, will join Courtney Clayton, Linda Garcia, Breanna Medina, Hope Moreno and Taylor Sargent. The first five were signed last November, while all will begin classes in Fall 2014.
