El Paso, TX (KDBC) —
Update: El Paso fire investigators are working to find out what sparked a massive blaze in south central El Paso Tuesday afternoon.
El Paso fire officials said the firefighters who are first responders in the area were on another call so it took units eight minutes to get to the house, which is double the average response time. Officials admit that gave the fire a head start and consumed the home.
Once the roof collapsed, firefighters took a defensive approach to battling the blaze, meaning they attacked it only from the outside.
The fire is a total loss with damages estimated at $100,000.
Crews with the El Paso Fire Department were dispatched to reports of a house fire in the 400 block of Huerta Street in South Central El Paso just before 4:00 p.m.
The fire has since been upgraded to a condition 3 fire with 13 fire units currently on scene battling the blaze. The location of the blaze is across the street from Clardy Fox Library and close to Henderson Middle School.
We have a crew en route and will bring you more information as it becomes available.
