El Paso, TX — Noel Candelaria, a former special education teacher in the Ysleta Independent School District, has been elected president of the Texas State Teachers Association. He will take office July 15.
Candelaria has been vice president of TSTA since July 2011. He was promoted in an election during TSTA’s House of Delegates convention in San Marcos over the weekend. He also is former president of the Ysleta Teachers Association, a TSTA affiliate.
“I am ready to lead the members of TSTA, organize all educators who teach our 5 million students and urge our students’ parents to join us in helping to shape a quality public education system in Texas,” Candelaria said.
Candelaria will succeed Rita Haecker, who has been TSTA president since 2008 and was term-limited.
TSTA delegates also elected Ovidia Molina, a teacher in Alief ISD in Houston, vice president. Linda Estrada of Donna ISD in the Rio Grande Valley was elected to the National Education Association Board of Directors.
TSTA is an affiliate of the National Education Association, a 3-million-member union of teachers and education support professionals.
