LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The City of Las Cruces unveiled its newest water tank mural Friday morning near Sonoma Ranch Boulevard.
The Jornada Water Tank at the intersection of Sedona Hills and Pagosa Hills took local artist Tony Pennock and his sons about a year to paint the 14,000 square foot tank.
"We kind of made it fit in with the landscape so if you have to live around it or drive by it all the time it's not an eyesore," Pennock said.
He said the inspiration for the artwork comes from living in the area and having seen petroglyphs firsthand.
Pennock included those petroglyphs depicting a story of a deer hunt while incorporating the colors of the area.
He said some of the challenges were battling the elements such as the wind and intense summer heat.
Pennock has painted more than half a dozen water tanks in Las Cruces.
