Las Cruces, NM (KDBC) — Las Cruces Police have identified the 21-year-old motorcyclist killed Wednesday as Dominic Phillips of Las Cruces.
LCPD say that Phillips was driving a 2012 Honda sport motorcycle east on Spruce when he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Chrysler LeBaron head-on shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
Traffic investigators believe that Phillips may have been speeding as he approached the intersection of Spruce and Virginia Street where a Las Cruces Police unit was stopped behind another car waiting for oncoming traffic to pass before turning right onto Virginia.
As Phillips approached the stopped LCPD car from behind his motorcycle veered into the westbound inside lane of traffic and stuck the LeBaron.
A helmet was located at the scene of the crash, but police are unsure if Phillips was wearing it at the time of the crash. The Honda sport motorcycle caught fire after the crash.
The 20-year-old woman driving the Chrysler LeBaron was not injured in the crash and no charges are pending.
