Phoenix, AZ (CNN) — Arizona Governor Jan Brewer announced tonight that she has vetoed controversial Senate Bill 1062.
The so-called "religious freedom" bill would have allowed business owners the right to refuse service to gays and lesbians, or anyone else, based on their religious beliefs.
Momentum had been building for Governor Brewer to make her decision by the end of the week amid pressure from fellow Republicans and big corporations.
Dozens of protesters gathered outside the state capitol ahead of the governor's announcement.
opponents said the measure would have legalized discrimination while supporters said it protected religious freedom.
Gov. Brewer said she had met with lawmakers on both sides of the issue throughout the day before reaching her decision.
She said her agenda was to sign into law legislation that advances Arizona.
