Las Cruces, NM — New Mexico State softball’s junior outfielder Stacie Rodriguez was named Hitter of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference for the week of Feb. 10-16, the conference office announced Monday. The honor is the second for the Aggies in as many weeks and fourth for Rodriguez in her career.
Rodriguez, a Paramount, Calif. native, hit .333 with five RBI, three runs scored and two home runs at the Troy Cox Classic last week. Rodriguez opened the tournament with a double up the middle in her first at-bat. In a game against Northern Colorado, the Aggies trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh when she hit a walk-off grand slam to give New Mexico State a 4-3 victory. Rodriguez added another solo home run in a 5-4 win over Iowa State. She ended the weekend with an .800 slugging percentage and also drew three walks during the tournament.
She was named WAC Player of the Year in 2013 for a league-leading 20 home runs, which tied her for 10th in the nation. She was named to the Preseason All-WAC first team and Preseason all-America second team by College Sports Madness.
After starting the season with 10 home games, NM State sets out on the road for 22 straight, beginning with the UTEP Invitational Feb. 21-13. The Aggies play five games on the weekend starting with Incarnate Word at 10 a.m. and Houston Baptist at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21. On Saturday, the Aggies meet HBU at 10 a.m. and end the weekend with two more games versus Incarnate Word at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23.
