El Paso, TX (KDBC) — A man was taken into police custody after firing shots at an El Paso Police Officer on the 3rd floor of the DeSoto Hotel at 209 E. Mills on Thursday afternoon.
"Everything was great, just a normal day and then from there on, everybody just kind of switches to a different mode. It's kind of scary," said Frank Montes, the owner of "The Network Bar & Grill."
El Paso Police say officers arrived at the hotel on a disturbance call around 1:10 p.m. on Thursday. One of the officers knocked on the door of a third floor room, and the suspect, only identified at this time as a black male, answered the door and shot at the officer.
The officer was able to take cover as the man allegedly fired a second shot at the officer. The officer was not injured in the incident.
EPPD requested additional police assistance and the SWAT team was dispatched to the scene to assist. The man eventually exited the hotel room where he was taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers.
"I didn't really expect it to get to this scale. I just kind of thought they were having a little issue outside. It wasn't until I started seeing the assault rifles and SWAT team arrive to where I kind of knew the situation was escalating," said Fabian Cobos, a witness.
"Everbody was scared," said Frank Montes Jr., another witness.
The suspected shooter was taken to University Medical Center for medical evaluation.
At this time, police say the suspect is facing charges of Criminal Attempt Capital Murder.
Police say the incident was contained to the 3rd floor of the DeSoto Hotel and no one was injured in the incident.
