Do you have a big sweet tooth? We've been warned time and time again that it can pack on the pounds but a new study says it could also be killing us. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that added sugar leads to an increased risk of death by cardiovascular disease.
Here are the scary numbers: The study compared people who consumed eight percent of their calories from sugar to those who consumed 17-21 percent of their calories from sugar and look at this, the participants who ate around ten percent or more of their calories from sugar daily had a 38 percent higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.So what type of sugar are we talking about?
Added sugars are the most harmful. These are sugars that are added to the obvious processed foods such as candy, dairy dessert and some cereals, but also to less obvious foods like some salad dressings, packaged bread and pasta sauce. Researchers say natural sugar is safe, like that found in things like fruit.
