El Paso, TX — UTEP forward Vince Hunter was selected the Conference USA Freshman of the Week for the third time this season on Monday, based on a vote by league media members.
Hunter tied the UTEP freshman record for single game points (26) in an 89-79 win over Louisiana Tech, then scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half as the Miners rallied for a 68-57 victory over Rice. He shot 8-for-12 from the field and went to the line 16 times (making 10) versus the Bulldogs, while adding nine rebounds and two blocks in 38 minutes. He joined Giovanni St. Amant (versus Hawaii on Jan. 2, 2003) as the only UTEP freshmen to score 26 points in a game. Hunter was 7-for-7 from the line in the second half versus Rice, as the Miners erased a nine-point deficit by closing the game with a 30-10 run. He also dished out a season-high five assists against the Owls. For the week, Hunter averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals, shooting 57.9 percent (11-for-19) from the field and 72 percent (18-for-25) from the line.
