Tuesday, November 19, 2013 is the first United Nations "World Toilet Day." While often the subject of potty humor, proper sanitation is actually a serious subject and a major global health concern.
According to the UN, two-and-a-half billion people which one in three people in the world, do not have a toilet or access to sustainable sanitation. In fact, diarrhea diseases are the second most common cause of death in young children in developing countries.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said sanitation for everyone must be a global development priority. It's a big issue in the Philippines right now, as the nation tries to recover from Typhoon Haiyan. One of the most pressing problems in the crisis is the lack of toilets and the collapse of water systems.
