A prominent downtown landmark has vanished. The iconic "Largatos" or alligator statue is missing from San Jacinto Plaza. However, it's only temporary. The artwork is being shipped to Ohio for a $30,000 restoration while the plaza gets a makeover. Renovations in the plaza started in July and will last about 18 months. Improvements will include pedestrian promenades, new landscaping and a water feature. Lagartos hasn't been moved since 1995. It'll return when construction is complete.
The upgrades at the plaza, including restoration of the sculpture, are being paid for with money from the 2012 Quality of Life Bonds that were approved by voters.
