Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State volleyball team opens its home schedule hosting a tournament in the Pan American Center, Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14. The Aggies open their own tournament at 10 a.m. (MT), Friday, facing Southern Utah before taking on Arkansas-Little Rock at 7:30 p.m. NM State wraps up its tournament, Saturday, at 1 p.m. (MT), when it faces Northern Illinois.
Radio Coverage: The Aggie Sports Network is airing 15 matches over the radio waves this season with 13 on KSNM AM 570 and two on KGRT 103.9 FM with Jay Sanderson giving the play-by-play action. The matches airing over the in Las Cruces can also be heard from anywhere around the world on the Internet by logging onto www.NMStateSports.com . Just click on the live events link to access the coverage for a fee.
Fans can catch the NM State vs. Northern Illinois match on KGRT 103.9 FM, Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. That is the only match scheduled to air over the radio waves this week.

About the Aggies: NM State is off to a slow start after taking on two top 10 teams and two PAC 12 opponents. The Aggies are 1-5, defeating Nevada in the season opener. NM State dropped an intense five set match to UC Santa Barbara, Aug. 31 in the Cal-Molten Classic hosted by California. The Aggies fell to No. 9 Hawaii, No.10 UCLA, and West Coast Conference competitor Santa Clara in the Hawaiian Airlines Invitational last week.
NM State is hitting .188 as a team and posting 11.29 kills per set while its opponents are hitting .288 on the year. Seniors Lauren Loerch and Desiree Scott are averaging at least 2.00 kills per set while Scott has a team-high .333 hitting percentage on the year. Senior Stephanie Ziegler has a team-high 61 digs on the year and is averaging 2.90 digs per set as Scott leads the way defensively at the net with 22 total blocks (1.05/set). The Aggies as a team are out-blocking their opponents 84-66. Freshman Aleisha Coates leads the way at the service line with 10 service aces.
NM State returns five starters as well as a libero from the 2012 WAC Tournament Champion team.
Leading the way for the Aggies are 2012 All-WAC selections, seniors Desiree Scott (middle hitter) and Lauren Loerch (outside hitter). NM State also returns senior libero/outside hitter Stephanie Ziegler who was named to the 2012 WAC all-tournament team. The Aggies finished the 2012 season with a 22-11 record while reaching the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history, all under head coach Mike Jordan.
This Weeks Opponents
Southern Utah: The Thunderbirds had their first win of the season against Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday morning. They had a five-set victory, 3-2. The Thunderbirds are 1-5. SU is led by Kylie Schofield who is posting a .214 hitting percentage and averaging 3.14 kills per set.
The Aggies are 1-0 all-time against SU. NM State defeated the Thunderbirds on Oct. 4, 1988.
UALR: The Trojans beat Rice 3-2, but then lost to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 2-3 at the Rice Invitational. UALR are 2-4 overall. The Trojans are led by Edina Begic who is posting .288 hitting percentage and averaging 5.04 kills per set.
The Aggies are 8-3 all-time against UALR. NM State lost the first three meetings against UALR, but has won the last eight times. The most recent win against the Trojans was in Sept. 9, 2011 the Aggies won 3-0.
Northern Illinois: The Huskies are 4-3 after defeating Belmont, 3-1 and losing to no.1 USC 3-1. The Huskies are lead by seniors Sarah Angelos and Justine Schepler, they are both rank among NCAA’s active statistical leaders. Angelos is second in the nation in sets played (422), tied for ninth in matches played (113) 24th in hitting percentage (.322) and 40th in kills (1,003). Schepler is tied for 11th nationally and second in her conference in matches played with 112.
The Aggies are 1-0 all times against NIU. NM State had a win 3-1 on Aug. 25, 2012 against NIU.
