El Paso, TX (KDBC) — It was the perfect night for football, as the UTEP Miners took on the New Mexico Lobos in their season opener.
Fans packed Sun Bowl stadium, and held their breath as the game went into overtime, but the Miners fell to UNM in a heart-wrenching loss.
Earlier Saturday evening, the marching band played and the people cheered, and with a beer in hand, football fanatics rooted for their favorite teams.
"This is a big experience for me. Just being out here with all my friends - I couldn't wish for anything better," said Toriello Simon.
It was a sea of orange on one end, and waves of crimson on the other.
Fans young and old participated in the fun.
"Every year, I usually come to the first games," said Alex Avila.
And this year, it was a new era for UTEP as new Head Coach Sean Kugler took the reins from former Coach Mike Price.
"It's Kugler nation tonight," said Griselda Rivas.
Saturday night's turnout showed much support for the new coach.
"We're excited. Hopefully, this is a new era for UTEP, and hopefully, everything gets better," said Griselda Rivas.
"New coach in staff, fans are here, it's a full house pretty much, compared to last year with coach price leaving," said George Joslin.
Saturday's turnout keeps UTEP hopeful that the trend will continue through the rest of the season.
