Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State soccer team opened the 2013 season at home with a 3-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha.
The Aggies posted a 12-6 advantage in shots with the veterans leading the way. Junior forward Layla Todd, junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen and senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol each scored a goal in the season opener.
“I’m very happy with the effort,” head coach Blair Quinn said. “I’m very happy with the way we started. I’m happy that we’re the first NM State team to play this year, and to start all of athletics with a win is very nice. It was good overall.”
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter played all 90 minutes and grabbed four saves in the victory.
Less than five minutes into the game, Todd converted a rebound off a Maverick defender to give NM State a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies increased their lead to 2-0, when Koziol found Luhrsen on the right side of the field from 10-yards away in the 16th-minute of action.
NM State had a 3-0 halftime advantage after Koziol scored her first goal of the year on a corner kick in the 33rd minute.
The second half was scoreless until the Mavericks slipped a header into the net in the final minute.
The Aggies continue their home opening weekend, when they host in-state rival New Mexico, Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.
