El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — The invitation says, “Find the hero in you,” and El Paso and this year Las Cruces residents have the chance to do just that by joining in the 5th annual Battle of the Badge community blood drive from August 16 – 18th at Cielo Vista Mall and Mesilla Valley Mall. “It is important to come together as a community to help one another,” said LuAnn Wieland with United Blood Services.
Our dedicated firemen, policemen and sheriffs are challenging all residents to donate blood and help save lives. They will be there helping us to recruit blood donors and donating themselves, and competing for your votes. It takes 175 blood donations every day to meet the needs of area patients and to be ready for emergencies. “We all expect blood to be there for us if we ever need it,” said Sergio Carrasco, Executive Director for United Blood Services “But only about 10% percent of area residents donate blood.”
Blood donated here helps save the lives of patients in 18 different hospitals throughout the El Paso and Southern New Mexico area.
Come out Friday, Saturday or Sunday, August 16th – 18th to Cielo Vista Mall and/or Mesilla Valley Mall and donate blood. You’ll get a cool red Battle of the Badges t-shirt and other giveaway…AND you can vote for your favorite heroes between the policemen, firemen and sheriffs!
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 23 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.
