EL PASO, TX ( KDBC) — Thursday, the community had the chance to meet the new future leader of EPISD, Juan Cabrera, an attorney from Austin.
"I was a teacher. I have not been a Superintendent. I haven't been a principle, but I have a lot of good business experience."
Teachers and parents listened intently to Cabrera's in-depth story of his upbringing, struggles and triumphs, education and qualifications for the job ahead.
"Very pleased with how positive and open and honest he seems to be about what his goals are for the district," said Tracy Bayer, a teacher and parent with EPISD.
But not everyone was pleased.
"We've been burned," said Orlando Solis, a teacher with EPISD.
One teacher said he speaks for others when he said he still has doubts. The community is still jaded from years of cheating scandals, that one former superintendent is paying for in jail.
"Is this going to be the same thing? Is this going to be the same show? Is it gonna happen again and it makes us worried," said Solis.
Bayer acknowledged the district has a long way to go.
"A lot of teachers I think have lost faith in the district. With the new board and new superintendent I think it's a good opportunity to change," said Bayer.
Cabrera said his immediate first steps would be to just sit back and listen, observe and bring calm and peace to the district.
"It's a smart response.f I thinks it's good to take a good look at what's going on," said Bayer.
Cabrera acknowledge it will take time to turn the district around.
"Trying to go ahead and fix that it's just a really monumental job," said Solis.
But Cabrera maintained his confidence in doing just that.
"We're gonna run an efficient school district. We're going to set a vision and we're gonna make sure that things get done right. And we're always gonna do it for the kids," said Cabrera.
Cabrera did not speak to media today, but has planned a specific press conference to answer all of media questions. By law, there must be 21 days from the time the board announced the finalist to the day he signs the contract.
