El Paso, Texas (KDBC) — Former Mayor John Cook has filed a claim against the city, seeking $700,000 that he says he's owed. Cook says he racked up a big bill while fighting a failed recall attempt in 2011, and it's an election he says should never have been allowed. Several El Pasoans tried to recall the mayor and two city representatives who voted to restore health benefits to gay and unmarried partners of city employees.
Cook claims the city's lawyers gave bad advice to city council, which allowed the the referendum election. City council will discuss the claim next week in executive session. Cook announced earlier this week that he now plans to run for Texas Land Commissioner.
