Sanford, FL — Murder? Or self defense? Those are the questions at the center of a trial getting underway today (Monday) in Florida. George Zimmerman is charged with second degree murder in the killing of Trayvon Martin.
On February 26, 2012, volunteer watchman George Zimmerman called 9-1-1 to report a suspicious person walking around his Sanford, Florida neighborhood. Going against instructions, police say Zimmerman pursued the person and there was a violent confrontation. 17-year old Martin was shot and killed. He was unarmed.
Zimmerman admitted to shooting the teen. He was taken into custody but later released after telling investigators he fired in self defense. The case ignited a firestorm of controversy.
Zimmerman was eventually charged with second degree murder.
