El Paso, TX (KDBC) — The sound of roaring aircrafts zooming overhead, leaving behind footprints in the sky, has been a familiar and exciting sight for families in El Paso for many years.
But some of the nation's best fliers may have their wings clipped this year.
"Our partnership with the Amigo Airsho has not dissolved, it has simply been postponed until sequestration is rescinded," said Major Joe Buccino, spokesperson for Fort Bliss.
The Borderland's famous Amigo Airsho will not be held at Fort Bliss this year because of budget cuts.
The fancy aerial performances and other fun family activities draw in thousands of people annually.
Last year, almost 90,000 people attended the Amigo Airsho, but now that there's a possibility it may not happen this coming October, El Pasoans we spoke with said they're disappointed to say the least.
"It's kind of sad because it's something to do in El Paso, like, there's not much to do in El Paso but when there is, it's for families," said Carlos Fernandez.
In the past, the event has brought in more than $2 million to the local economy.
"We're sorry about that, however, it's not over with yet," said Pancho Mangan, CEO of the Amigo Airsho.
Organizers aren't giving up on trying to put on a show but admit they don't have a plan for how or where it's going to happen. Either way, they say it won't be as extravagant as before.
"For it to not be there, to be in some generic venue is not going to be the same, I don't think," said Gilbert Jorgenson.
In April, two main air show acts announced they would not perform -- the US Navy's Blue Angels and the Air Force's Thunderbirds team were both grounded.
But now, it may be an entirely empty sky come October -- a gloomy thought for some.
"It's going to be real sad for a bunch of kids because a lot of kids don't have nothing to do out here," said Michael Salloum.
"The air show has been an El Paso tradition for as far back as I can remember so it being cancelled is I think a huge shock to the community," said Jorgenson.
The last time there was any sort of interruption for the Amigo Airsho was September 11th when the event had to be postponed and rescheduled.
