El Paso, TX (KDBC) — Memorial Day weekend has arrived, and one mother in New Mexico, is observing the day in a very special way.
Sandra Garcia anxiously awaits her son's homecoming.
"It's been exciting, very exciting," said Garcia.
It's been well over a year since she saw Anthony. In the army, he was based in Alaska after spending a year in Afghanistan.
At times she said it felt like an emotional rollercoaster. She worried she'd never see her 22 year-old son again.
"You never know because for a while he couldn't get in contact with you. It was very rare that I talked to him while he was over there in Afghanistan," said Garcia.
But Friday, she was able to put all that behind her.
"Love him to death. He's like my best friend. He's outgoing. He's loving. He's caring," said Garcia.
She's one of the lucky mothers who can honor his service to this country, this memorial day weekend, right by his side.
"I love you. I missed you. I'm glad you're home," said Garcia.
Garcia reunited, after a delayed flight, with his anxiously awaiting family.
"It feels good," said Garcia, upon getting off the plane.
This trip home signals the beginning of his civilian life. He plans on going to business school.
"Trying different opportunities in life and stuff like that," said Garcia.
Garcia says he looks forward the most to his mother's cooking,
"A home cooked meal is what I miss the most," said Garcia.
And at 22, he's got a lot of those ahead of him.
