El Paso (KDBC) AAA, North America's largest motoring and leisure travel organization defined the Memorial Day Holiday as a five day travel period that will begin May 23 to May 27.
It's a time to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and it is also a time families will spend together traveling the roads of America. 2.9 million Texans are expected on our state's highways and roads. That is a one percent increase from last year. ]\
Texans won't go far or spend a lot of money. The average family will spend about $567 and travel round trip about 829 miles.
Nationally, overall travel this holiday will be down. A recent AAA survey, compared to last year, indicated auto travel this holiday will be up while air travel along with bus, train and cruise ships will be down.
Gas prices are also expected to increase this weekend. The state wide average per gallon was $3.43, El Paso was $3.46 and that number nationally was $3.66.
The message from Texas AAA as the summer travel season kicks off is to stay safe and buckle up every occupant traveling.
